The practice of massage is as old as humankind with many variations being found throughout the world. Chinese artifacts point to the pratice of massage as far back as 3000 bc An Indian Ayuvedic medical text written about 1800 bc describes how to rub and ‘’shampo” the body to aid its recovery after injury in ancient Greece and Rome, massage was a principal mehtod of medical treatment. The Greek physician Hippocrates wrote in 400 bc that ”The physician must be experienced in many things but assuredly in rubbing… for rubbing can blind a joint that is too hard

Benefit of massage
Massage aim to work on both body and mind on a physical level, massage generates a mechanical effect throughout the body. It is believed to relax the muscles and the central nervous sysytem and stimulates sluggish body system , aiding digestion and the elimination of waste products. Massage aims to reduce swelling . stimutate blood and lymp flow, soften skin and scar tissue and break down fibrous tissue around joints.

A good psychosocial or psychosexual history is needed when organic diseases are excluded or coexisting psychiatric disorders are suggested. Obtain sufficient history to evaluate depression; anxiety disorder; somatization; physical or sexual abuse; drug abuse/dependence; and family, marital, or sexual problems. Somatization is a common associated psychologic disorder in women with chronic pain. Somatization scales can be used for evaluation.
